“Ukraine History for the World and for Ourselves”

Under this headline, Olga Petrenko-Tseunova published an extensive article in the weekly socio-political magazine “Ukrainian Week” about the presentation of the “Ukrainian History: Global Initiative” project in Kyiv on September 11, 2024. Over a hundred representatives from media outlets, leading academic and cultural institutions, and opinion leaders attended the Initiative’s presentation at the Diplomatic Academy of Ukraine.

“I’m so bored of the Putin political myth,” – Timothy Snyder is quoted in the publication, – ”Occasionally I feel like I make some corrections in a sense of pure obligation. I would never take three years of my life and do something because Putin said. Putin with his army and nuclear weapons is not about history. It’s about trying to make something positive. It’s not about confronting one myth with another myth. This is a project not only for Ukrainian, but as I see it for the modern humanity. Humanity doesn’t know where the horse was domesticated, where the Indo-European language originated. Greek, Norman, and other civilizations converged on the territory of Ukraine, which makes it unique.”

A member of the project’s Board of Directors, Archbishop Borys Gudziak, noted: “What interests me most in this project are the meanings. We can’t grasp them if we don’t understand the specific contexts—economic, social, political, and military processes. I’m interested in the priorities of the people who lived on this land and, in some way, are our ancestors. How did they measure time and view eternity? What did life and death mean to them? This interdisciplinary project opens up these perspectives from various angles.”

Ukrainian and foreign historians, inspired by the first scientific conference, shared their views on the value and importance of this project, the opportunities it opens up, and their expectations of the collaboration of researchers.
